Getting to Vieques for Your Wedding: Tips for Stepping off the Beaten Path

Getting to Vieques for Your Wedding: Tips for Stepping off the Beaten Path
some tips make travel a little easier
Vieques is one of the most extraordinary wedding destinations in the Caribbean. Getting there requires a little more planning than a direct flight to a resort — but once you understand your options, the logistics are straightforward. Here's what you need to know before you book.
Option 1 — Fly from SJU International Airport
The most seamless option for guests flying in from the mainland. Several regional carriers operate short puddle jumper flights directly from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan to Vieques. The flight takes approximately 30 minutes and drops you almost directly onto the island with minimal ground transportation on either end.
The main carriers operating this route include Cape Air and Vieques Air Link, though availability changes seasonally so confirm current service when you book.
Want to save a little money? Isla Grande Airport is a smaller general aviation airport just five to nine minutes by taxi from SJU international. Vieques Air Link operates flights from Isla Grande at lower fares than the international terminal — worth considering if you’re comfortable with a quick taxi transfer between airports.
One thing to know about the return trip: If you’re flying home through SJU on a connecting flight, Cape Air allows you to forward your bags directly to partner airlines like Delta — a seamless experience that skips the baggage claim and re-check process. Other carriers require you to collect your bags at SJU and check in again for your onward flight. Factor in extra time at the airport if your carrier doesn’t offer interline baggage agreements. And regardless of carrier, you will always need to go through security upon arriving at the international terminal — plan accordingly.
On luggage: Small aircraft have weight limits and on a full flight, occasionally not all luggage makes it on the same plane. Your bags will follow on the next available flight and can be collected at the Vieques airport a few hours later. It’s rare, but worth knowing — don’t pack anything essential in checked luggage that you’ll need immediately upon arrival.
Option 2 — Fly from Ceiba (José Aponte de la Torre Airport)
Ceiba is located on Puerto Rico’s east coast, roughly an hour’s drive from San Juan depending on traffic. The flight from Ceiba to Vieques is approximately eight minutes — one of the shortest commercial flights in the world and genuinely one of the more memorable ways to arrive on the island.
Flying from Ceiba is often less expensive than departing from SJU and the airport is smaller and more relaxed. The tradeoff is getting there — you’ll need a rental car or taxi from San Juan, which adds time and a bit of logistical coordination. For couples or wedding parties renting a car on the main island anyway, Ceiba is worth considering.
Option 3 — The Ferry
The ferry from Ceiba to Vieques is the most economical option and offers a different kind of arrival — watching the island appear on the horizon as you cross the channel. The crossing takes approximately one hour. Tickets can be purchased at puertoricoferry.com.
A few things to know before you choose this option:
Tickets: Passenger ferry tickets typically can’t be purchased far in advance — they’re usually released around two weeks before departure and a percentage is held back for counter sales. Online tickets sell out quickly, but walk-up tickets are almost always available. On a very busy holiday weekend you may wait a few hours at the counter, so build that buffer into your travel day.
Cars: Bringing a rental car from the main island on the ferry is generally not possible for non-residents. The car ferry has historically been restricted to residents, though this has become slightly more flexible in recent years. Plan to leave your rental car on the main island. There is parking available near the terminal — approximately 500 yards away — and a shuttle service runs between the lot and the terminal. Just plan ahead rather than assuming you can drive to the dock and walk on.
Seasickness: The Vieques channel can be choppy, particularly in winter months when trade winds are stronger. If you or your guests are prone to motion sickness, come prepared or consider flying instead. Dramamine and ginger can also be helpful, and some vessels offer outdoors seating–which is recommended either way!
Which Option is Right for You?
For the easiest experience: Fly from SJU. More expensive but the most seamless door-to-door.
For the most affordable flight: Fly from Ceiba if you’re already renting a car or comfortable with the drive. Or take a quick taxi to Isla Grande and fly with Vieques Air Link for a budget-friendly alternative without leaving San Juan.
For the most affordable overall: Take the ferry, but build extra time into your travel day and don’t count on buying tickets far in advance.
For wedding parties with guests flying in from multiple cities: SJU departures make coordination simplest since everyone is already connecting through the international terminal.
A Few General Tips
Book flights early. Seats on the island hoppers are limited and they fill up, particularly on peak season weekends and around holidays.
Pack light. Whether you’re flying or ferrying, oversized luggage creates friction. Most Vieques villas have laundry facilities and the island’s pace doesn’t require much.
Build buffer time. Island travel rewards flexibility. A delayed puddle jumper or a ferry line that moves slower than expected is part of the experience. Plan your travel day generously and enjoy the journey.
Wedding dress logistics: If you’re flying in a wedding gown, carry it on rather than checking it. Small aircraft and ferry holds are not the place to trust a dress you’ve spent months choosing.
Already on Vieques?
Once you’re here, the island is small and easy to navigate. Most couples rent a car or a Jeep for the duration of their stay — it’s the best way to explore beaches, find restaurants, and get between your villa and your wedding venue without depending on limited taxi availability.
